One wall drywall repair job, separate from the ceiling.

Carpet and hardwood areas are separate parts of the floor. Together they cannot exceed the affected area.

For a smaller cleanup in one room with clean water, a Los Angeles area restoration company publishes a range of about $1,500 to $5,000. The same company publishes about $5,000 to $15,000 for damage across several rooms and $15,000 to over $50,000 for severe losses with sewage, mold or major rebuilding (accessed October 2026). These are published ranges, not quotes. The provider sets the actual price after inspecting your home.

What drives the cost

  • Type of water. Contamination changes the work required. Water from appliances may need additional cleaning, while sewage and outside floodwater can require protective measures and removal of porous materials.
  • How long the water sat. Wet materials that are dried within 24 to 48 hours are much less likely to grow mold. After that, a drying job can turn into a mold job.
  • How far it spread. Water runs under baseboards and into walls. One wet room on the surface can mean more behind the walls.
  • What got wet. Material type, construction and condition affect drying and repair costs. Original finishes and built in cabinets may need specialist assessment.
  • Drying time. Equipment is usually billed per day and commonly runs about 3 to 5 days.
  • Rebuilding. Drying (mitigation) and putting the room back together (reconstruction) are often priced separately, and reconstruction can be the larger bill.

Typical cost by item

  • Drying equipment, per unit and day: air movers about $25 to $75, dehumidifiers about $50 to $200, HEPA air scrubbers about $75 to $200 (Los Angeles area).
  • Ceiling repair: about $450 to $1,600. Drywall repair: about $300 to $850 (national).
  • Carpet and pad removal: about $2 to $4 per sq ft. New carpet: about $4 to $12 per sq ft installed (Los Angeles area).

Does insurance pay?

Standard homeowners policies often cover sudden and accidental water damage, such as a burst pipe, a failed water heater or a ruptured appliance supply line. They usually do not cover gradual damage from a slow leak, and flood damage typically requires a separate flood policy. Sewer backup is often covered only with an optional endorsement. If your claim is covered, you generally pay your deductible. Check your own policy and contact your insurer early. Ask the provider to photograph and document the damage before cleanup starts.

How to keep the cost down

  1. Stay away from the affected area, shut off water and power only if it is safe to do so, and call a professional.
  2. Call early. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth, and the provider decides how the affected materials should be dried.
  3. Ask the provider to document the damage for your insurer before anything is removed.
  4. Ask for a written scope and estimate before work begins, and ask whether rebuilding is included.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum charge for water damage restoration?

Often yes. A Los Angeles area restoration company publishes typical minimums of about $500 to $1,500.

Does water damage restoration cost more at night or on weekends?

It depends on the company. Some charge the same rate at all hours, others add a fee for work outside business hours. Ask before work starts.

Why are published prices so different?

They describe different jobs. A price for drying one room and a price that includes rebuilding walls and floors are not comparable. Always compare the scope, not only the total.
